As usual in jazz, formations names don't refer to a group, but are rather an indication of the number of people involved in a recording session.
This Sextet doesn't break the rule, and a number of very different formations are covered by its name, although the most important one is possibly the troup from 1962, namely Nat Adderley, Cannonball Adderley, Yusef Lateef, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes.
