Recording Date: 12 June 1935
Recording Location: New York, USA
Additional:
This is the second cut from the very first recording session of Ella Fitzgerald (along with I'll Chase the Blues Away, issued by Brunswick).
Personnel still needs a double checking.
There is a lot of confusion about the composers credits for this.
On most Fitzgerald issues, this is credited as Sonny Curtis (BMI #913217).
It happens that a (well known folk/nashville) Sonny Curtis is credited for a Love and Kisses song from 1965 (used in a soundtrack) - fact is that Sonny Curtis wasn't even born in 1935... and it sounds highly unlikely that *two* different Sonny Curtis composed a song with the same title at thirty years interval.
Interestingly, other Fitzgerald and Webb reissues (of the same track), and Jordan's issues of that song don't credit Curtis, but 1935 Johnson / Schwartz / Whiting (see for example http://130.65.109.14/popup.htm?id=29051&cid=4100&t=3&/research/special/music_coll/musicColl_popup). Though, neither BMI nor ASCAP tracks it.
Last, some Fitzgerald issues credit Friml / Stohl / Webster (ASCAP #420081263 published by EMI), and this is also stated on a Nina Hagen cover of that tune (see http://www.totalobscurity.com/nina/lyrics/bigbandexplosion/bbe.html) that explicitely refers to this 1935 take (gives credit to Friml / Webster only, though).
Other rendition of this song credit Baker / Stohl / Webster, Baker / Silvers, or even a mix of all of these names!
Right now, it seems hard to figure out the correct credit.
My guess:
- Sonny Curtis for the late 60s version (hence unrelated to this)
- Baker / Silvers for a piano only version (Love and Kisses (From Baby to You)), possibly even a different tune - see for example: http://www.sjlibrary.org/popup.htm?id=40624&cid=14898&t=2&/research/special/music_coll/musicColl_popup - though there is no ASCAP/BMI entry for it
- Johnson / Schwartz / Whiting may possibly be a typo (credit being copied from another take from these sessions: Rhythm And Romance). No ASCAP/BMI entry either
- hence my pick (for this sang version) would go for Friml / Webster, based partly on the Nina Hagen crediting that does suggest they did their homework, partly on the fact there is an ASCAP entry.
