A New Kind of Soul is a gem.
The songs follow a formula, lay out a sick beat and modulate it. This describes every other pop song ever made, you say? You'd be wrong, because 1. This droning effect is avoided at all cost both by will-be hitmakers and intellectual musican's musicians. It is only really ever seen in the electronic scene. 2. The mood presented by this band is outstandingly smothering in the best way, you cannot escape from the piano's bass, the muffled drums, and the distorted, almost electric horns.
Combining points 1 and 2, It's like the perfect hip hop beat.
This album stands out as a singluar with no equal in its raw groove combined with jazz sensitivities. This definitely nothing like Larry Willis' other, extremely long career. What happened? This we may never know, but let's just be glad that this album, with its smokey texture that sometimes won't let you breathe in excitement, and sometimes will protect you and lull you into full relaxation.
I love this album. Picks me up every time.
