An ecstatically received set at this year's Cambridge festival has built up a bit of a buzz around this debut from Gaelic singer and whistle player Julie Fowlis (also of the acclaimed Dochas).

And rightly so; mar a tha mor chridhe ('as my heart is') is a gem of a disc. Pipe tunes, mouth music, jigs and reels nestle alongside songs and ballads, most originating from Fowlis' native South Uist. Her singing is unfussy, economical but beautifully expressive (no translations are needed much of the time), and sensitive, detailed instrumental support comes from the likes of John McCusker and Éamon Doorley of Irish trad outfit Danu.

Fowlis is no slouch on the pipes or whistles either, and the jigs and reels are delivered with gusto and precision. But it's the ballads that resonate best; check the title track or the wistful "Mo Bean Chomain" for proof. A name to watch, I'm sure of that.
