Now three seasons in, cult sci-fi TV show Heroes offers an X-Files-meets-X-Men twist on definitions of normality by charting the stories of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary powers. Regrettably, such magical alchemy is conspicuously missing from the show's oddly (and pointlessly) assembled patchwork of a soundtrack.

Appearing no less than four times, and to wholly anonymous effect is the 11-second Wendy and Lisa's main theme, tagged to slivers of the series' incidental music. It's a strikingly old-fashioned mish-mash of breathy synths, stretched and blurred electronic beeps and repetitive percussive ticks. This may have won a 'Top Television Series' soundtrack award in the US, but that doesn't make it any the more memorable.

Elsewhere, eclecticism bordering on the esoteric and indulgent results in an altogether odd array of dance and indie-rock alongside pop and world music-tinged tracks that sit together with considerably less success than the show's own curiously extended proposition.

If you're a Heroes fan you may well want this. If you're not, you certainly won't. If you're a Jesus & Mary Chain completist, a Dylan devotee, a disciple of Iggy Pop, wild about Wilco, bananas about Bowie - yes, it's that track - or addicted to The Chemical Brothers, all of whom contribute tracks, you'll want this. If you're not, you won't.
