Following 2019’s absolute dumpster fire that was Catharsis and half the band’s long-term line-up jumping ship, it was easy to think that Machine Head were done, or at least in serious trouble. But Machine Head has done it before. Remember Supercharger and the brilliant resurrection that is Through the Ashes of Empires? Without that struggle and success, we would never have received The Blackening. It comes as a welcome surprise, then, that ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN was one of the best things you could hear in 2022. Storming back into raging form, Robb Flynn and the revamped band have delivered a little monster.
Prefer something thrashier? Then CHØKE ØN THE ASHES ØF YØUR HATE is for you. Just want chunky riffs that slay with no shits given for the amount of damage wrought by them? Then BLØØDSHØT does the job. The new guitarist, Vogg, is more than a match for his predecessor, and his playing complement Robb’s greatly. Jared MacEachern’s vocal contributions soar where they fell flat on Catharsis. There is a real sense of progression as the album unfolds too, the whole thing held together by a sci-fi concept, which is also something new for the band.
Even though they couldn’t top the popularity that was The Blackening, Machine Head have well and truly burst forth and proven that they still have what it takes to destroy their own past achievements. ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN was a hugely anticipated record for 2022 and it didn’t disappoint.
