Annotation
Rare spacemusic from Japan
Rigid, angular, and intense one moment — elegant, rarified, and flowing with sweet sentiment the next. Very few traditions have the tonal range and dynamic contrasts found in the classical music of Japan. On this hour of Hearts of Space, a program of spacemusic from the land of the rising sun called - MOON AT DAWN.
Most of our selections come from rare albums only available in Japan, but we'll begin with two east/west fusion pieces on Western labels by one of the best-known expatriate Japanese musicians: OSAMU KITAJIMA. We'll also hear from percussionist and multi instrumentalist YAS-KAZ from a compilation album called DARKNESS IN DREAMS, and the extraordinary Koto virtuoso TOMOKO SUNAZAKI, from TEGOTO.
Japanese electronics are famous everywhere, but Japanese composers have their own way with the synthesizer: later on we'll be hearing recent spacemusic by AZUMA, YOSHIO OJIMA, and TADAMITSU SAITO, and we'll wrap it up with more from YAS-KAZ.
It's a journey in the Japanese soundspace: MOON AT DAWN.
