Former Rephlex regular Ed Upton aka DMX Krew tops off a productive 2016 with yet another quality cut. Following a box set for Fundamental Records, a full-length for Hypercolour and a mini album for Belgian label Ekster, Space Cucumber sees him return to CPU, marking his third outing for the Sheffield label. Judging from the evil, dissonant explorations of ‘Re-Invasion’ and the extraterrestrial melody of ‘Positronic Matter’, the EP – in keeping with his previous ones for the imprint – appears to sit slightly more towards the darker end of his output’s spectrum. Yet, featuring dry drum machines and gnarly synths throughout, it bears his signature vintage style, dressed in a sci-fi theme. As usual, there’s an unparalleled haptic to his productions: the title track embarks on an italo-disco spiced space vegetable trip, while the saxophone imitating synth over the funky bassline of ‘Radioactive Leak’ adds a next level humorous touch.
