Revisions and Editions
The Sixth Symphony was first published in 1899, a task overseen by Cyrill Hynais, a former student of Bruckner. However, this edition encompassed a few minute changes from Bruckner's original score, and has only been recorded twice. The edition printed in 1935, edited by Robert Haas, is the edition most commonly performed today. In 1951 Leopold Nowak also published an edition that exactly replicated Bruckner's original 1881 score. An edition performed under the baton of Gustav Mahler for the work's premiere was never published.
A copied set of handwritten parts of the original 1881 score was known to have existed, but was believed to be entirely lost. However, Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs found a remnant of it in the archive of the Monastery of St. Florian. Cohrs´ further research in Vienna then brought to light the full set of parts, which earlier researchers had apparently overlooked. Most of the parts reveal autograph corrections as well as some pencil annotations by orchestral players (added dynamics etc.). This edition was published by Cohrs in 2015.
A version of the 1881 score was published by Josef Venantius Wöss in 1927 as part of a set of the complete Bruckner symphonies. This rare edition is scarcely ever performed.
