Octet in E-flat major, op. 20: Scherzo (orchestral version)
~ Œuvre
Annotation
For the première performance of his First Symphony, Mendelssohn orchestrated the Scherzo from his Octet Op. 20 as an alternative third movement. The symphony was premièred in this form at a private gathering on 14 November 1824 to honor his sister Fanny Mendelssohn's 19th birthday. A public première followed on 1 February 1827, with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under the leadership of its then-Kapellmeister Johann Philipp Christian Schulz. Mendelssohn, however, restored the original third movement when the Symphony was published in 1831.
